Cars Stick In Soft Ground
Criswell Cemetery Rife With Flowers For Memorial Event
The eleventh annual Criswell Cemetery Association
Memorial Homecoming Day was held Sunday, June 10, at the Criswell Community
Center.
A large crowd attended from various parts of the
state. Due to so much rain the past few days the ground was too soft in
places for some of the cars. A tractor was summoned to tow them out.
The cemetery was clean and profuse with flowers, both
fresh and artificial. The new steel fence around the cemetery adds to its
attractiveness. The aim of the association in the way of improvements, is
to paint the community center building and some renovating.
At 11 a.m. a program was presented under the direction
of Mrs. George Stone. Thomas Criswell was in charge of the congregational
singing, and Mrs. C. A. McCoy was pianist. Three congregational songs
were sung, led by Mr. Criswell.
The welcoming address was given by Betty
Broxton. The response by David Broxton. Mrs. Jane Baron sang “God
Will Take Care of You,” and “Satisfied With Jesus,” accompanied by Miss Judy
Baron.
Mrs. Aubrey Stone presented a piano medley of sacred
music: “When the Roll is Called Up Yonder,” “Safe in the Arms of Jesus,”
and “Pass Me Not,” then accompanied the congregation in singing “Pass Me Not,”
led by Mr. Criswell.
A memorial reading, “In Memory,” was given by Mrs.
Donald Sandhoff.
The mortuary list was read by Thomas Criswell which
included the names of Alger Rodgers, Azor Pace, Miss Brady Broxton, James L.
Pittman Sr. and Stan F. Jones.
A memorial prayer was led by A. J. (Albert)
Wolf. Mr. Wolf introduced his grandson, Thomas Wolf of Houston, who gave
the message. Thomas Wolf is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Wolf of
Houston. His grandparents are the late Mr. and Mrs. James L. Pittman Sr.
and Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Wolf.
The invocation was given by C. C. Stone. At noon
a basket lunch was served on tables under shade trees.
After lunch, congregational songs were led by Thomas
Criswell, Mrs. Jane Baron and others, accompanied by Mrs. C. A. McCoy and Mrs.
Aubrey Stone.
The Business meeting was held with the president, C.
A. McCoy, presiding. The secretary, Thomas Criswell, read the minutes and
gave the treasurer’s report. Contributions were made for the upkeep of
the cemetery.
